Endemic to Lord Howe Island – a volcanic island situated between New Zealand and Australia in the Tasman Sea – the Kentia has been a popular plant in Europe and the US since the 1870’s. The modern version of the plant, for indoor use in the UK, actually consists of 3-5 palms planted closely together to provide a bushier specimen. Kentia palms are a relatively tolerant plant and will cope with lower light and cooler temperatures than other palms, hence their popularity in the UK.
The ideal spot for a Kentia is a bright location, away from direct sunlight and heat sources such as radiators. Although reasonably slow growing, Kentia’s can end up as quite bushy plants so give them plenty of space.
Kentia’s like a compost that drains well. The roots of the Kentia are very sensitive both to disturbance and to overwatering. The palm will thrive when regularly misted and allowed to dry out between waterings.
